Born in Huntsville, Alabama, Grosser studied mathematics at Harvard University, graduating in 1924. While at Harvard, he took painting classes and had works exhibited at the university's Fogg Art Museum. He went on to be a painter, art critic and writer. He had numerous solo shows at prominent museums and galleries throughout his lifetime, including Galerie Vignon in Paris (1931), The Arts Club in Chicago; High Museum, Atlanta, Georgia; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; Knoedler Gallery, New York; Julien Levy Gallery, New York; Boston Athenaeum; Huntsville Museum of Art, Alabama; Art Gallery, University of Ife, Nigeria; Hirschl & Adler Gallery, New York; and more.
