The term "clobbering" is used to describe export porcelain items that were hand painted in underglaze blue in China and then exported to Europe where they were enhanced with bright polychrome enamels and gilt. These additions applied over the existing blue decoration were not intended as part of the original design, and were added to make an item more desirable to the changing European market.

One with professional restoration to rim and drilled hole to underside, possible retouching to shoulder; the other with slight retouching to rim; minor flaking to polychrome decoration.
