Circa 1780s, watercolor on ivory, unsigned, the blue-eyed gentleman attired in light blue coat with cravat and ruffled chemise, set against a warm background with architectural column to far left, presented behind glass in a gold filled oval locket, the reverse with period gilt monogram "JV" to aperture revealing a woven plait of hair, with attribution label of Lawrence Sully (Irish/American, 1769-1804), enclosed within a conforming red leather and silk travel case.

Locket 3 1/8 x 2 1/8 in.; case 3 3/4 x 3 1/8 in.; painting 2 3/8 x 1 7/8 in.

Good estate condition; red case with some wear commensurate with age, missing locking clasp.
