An Insider's Look: My Bondage and My Freedom
"I shall place this book in the hands of the only child spared me, bidding him to strive and emulate its noble example." - Dr. James McCune Smith in his introduction to My Bondage and My Freedom by Frederick Douglass
Listen as our Historical & Book Cataloguer, Emily Kerrigan, provides an insider's look into Frederick Douglass's second autobiography, My Bondage and My Freedom. Significantly expanding upon his first autobiography, which he wrote in 1845, this work also includes extracts from his lectures and speeches, as well as an introduction from his friend, Dr. James McCune Smith. Both an influential medical doctor and abolitionist of the time, Dr. Smith describes Douglass's work as "an American book, for Americans, in the fullest sense of the idea. It shows that the worst of our institutions, in its worst aspect, cannot keep down energy, truthfulness, and earnest struggle for the right." This first edition book is being offered in our March Estate Auction, which opens for live bidding on Thursday, March 28th at 10am. Pre-bidding is available now.
